The Story (History):
From what I've been able to gather, the cemetery was built a very long time ago and it was in such disrepair that a collective marker was put outside of it with the names of all of the people buried there.
I have also heard that in the 50's or 60's, a very large black man too children up there to murder them. I do not know if this is true or not, but it is said you can hear children screaming and see a huge black shape, a pair of red eyes, and a little boy wearing a gray outfit standing behind one of the only tombstones still standing with the lone name of 'Joseph' on it.
It is also said that there was also a church on that site but it mysteriously burned down during the 1800's and was rebuilt under a different name (Mount Hope Church) and that that church, too, either burned down or was moved to another location. No evidence of the church stands.
I have also heard that the cemetery was moved from it's original location. I do not know if that means this is the new or the old locations, it is just something I have heard.
It is also said that it seems to be ten to fifteen degrees cooler at the entrance than normal. Apparitions have been known to show up on photos taken in this place and nausea is common. Sunken graves are a problem, so be careful.
My Thoughts/Feelings/Findings/Opinions:
This place is pretty terrifying. As you are coming up on the cemetery, from the dirt road it looks like there's a huge wall or something because of the large trees covered in moss. I have been here three times and the first time, we had an interesting set of occurances. It was very cold near the entrance and inside the gate, we all felt compelled to run. On our first entrance, we heard something rushing us and we ran. You can read more about the night by clicking here.
The cemetery is really overgrown with stuff and it is easy to get lost, though it is a relitively small cemetery. I have been there in the summer and it isn't nearly as good as it is in the winter. There's too much green follage in the way in the summer for you to be able to see too far ahead of your face so it's sort of annoying. We've also found that it is best to go late at night. The earlier we go, the less scary it is. We went at about 1AM the first time and we were plagued with things happening. The others were ranked in fear and things by the times. So it is best to go in the winter around 1-3 AM.
This place is actually a geographical oddity. Traveling the dirt road to get there, you feel as though you're on a flat, non-sloping road. When you get to the top, go to the left of the road and look down. You're probably at least 20 up in the air.
Directions:
Take hwy 34 out of Darlington towards Dillon and go through Mechanicsville and pass old Georgetown road (or if your coming from Dillon or highway 38, keep on highway 34 until you find Georgetown Rd. on your left and pull in there and turn around because if you don't, it's hard to know where the dirt road is and even if you knew, it would be very hard to make that turn. It's not too far from there.). Start down the hill and watch for an unmarked dirt road on the right. Be careful of the severe drop on the left of the road that surrounds the cemetery. As you enter, it will be the path on the left that drops. If you go even as much as 6 inches off the dirt part of the road beside the cemetery, you'll have a long fall down to highway 34.
