The Story (History):
There are two parts to this story. The first is the house, The Hermitage. The second being the story of her gravesite at All Saints Church.
Alice Flagg was a young girl born to a family of upper class on the SC coast. The story goes that she was in love with a young man who was a mere lumberjack (other people may say he held another job but they all agree that he was a manual laborer). Her brother, being a doctor, strongly disapproved and ordered her not to see him again. Things went on and Alice and the young man were engaged. To hinder her brother from seeing the ring, to hault confrontations, she wore it on a ribbon around her neck.
She was sent to Charleston for schooling and attended a ball and shortly after, she grew sick. Some say it was malaria and others, scarlet fever. What-ever it was, it was bad. She was rushed back home to her brother who was to tend to her. One day, he found the ring around her neck, ripped it off, and disposed of it. Some say it was thrown out the window. Some say the ocean. Others say a stream, river, or lake.
Alice grew delirious with sickness and over the fact that the ring of her beloved was taken from her so she begged everyone she saw to find the ring for her. Alice, worn from her sickness, soon died. She never regained her ring.
Alice was buried in a temporary grave on the grounds of the Hermitage until her brother could contact their mother, who was in the mountains, about Alice's death. On her mother's arrival, her body was moved to be interred in the cemetery at All Saints Episcopal Chruch in Pawley's Island. This is where her body now rests. Her grave is marked by a simple slab, bearing the sole name, "ALICE". And this is where our second part to this ghostly story begins.
People say that to this day, you can see the figure of Alice around her home of the Hermitage, looking for her ring. She is often seen in her former bedroom, sometimes in the mirror and others have reported seeing her peering out a small round window that is near her room.
It is also reported that if you go near her grave, you may see a young girl. I've also heard that you can walk around it a certain amount of times and you will feel a tug at your ring. Another thing I've heard is that if you walk around it in reverse, you can lie upon the grave and talk to Alice.
My Thoughts/Feelings/Findings/Opinions:
I've heard of this story since I was very small. I used to read ghost stories from the area when I was younger (as young as 5 or 6) and this one has always drawn me. As of this article, I have never been to the Hermitage. I have finally been to Alice's grave! Before I'd gone though, my ghost hunting partner has been to the grave site and I have seen the pictures he has taken. We are still trying to locate the Hermitage itself and its owners so please contact me if you can help.
But apart from that, when we went together, we got some possible activity on film and on tape! You can CLICK HERE to hear what we got on tape. We were doing EVP all over the cemetery and then we went to this smaller little enclosed plot (I'm thinking a family plot) which was enclosed in a wrot iron fence. Darrell asked "Is there anyone here who wishes to communicate with us?" and less than a second later, the gate of the enclosement we were standing at opened about an inch and on the tape, you can hear the creeking sound of the old gate fairly well. Again, you can CLICK HERE to hear the audio file from that part of the night which shows our reactions to the creek and the creek itself.
Alice's grave is clearly set apart from the rest of the Flagg family's plot. It is the most simple of the graves, too. Others have beautiful stones and slabs while her's has only a slab with her first name on it. It is also a significant distance from any of the graves of the rest of her family.
Directions:
I'm unsure of the location of the Hermitage. We believe it is located NEAR Hermitage Lane in Murrells Inlet and it may be visible from a nearby marina. Its been said that it was recently moved slightly from the original location to make it less visible from the road.
Directions to All Saint's Church as taken from their website are:
"Coming south from Myrtle Beach on Hwy. 17, turn right onto Willbrook Blvd. (2nd light south of Brookgreen Gardens). Continue 1.3 miles. Turn left onto Kings River Road. Continue 2.2 miles to All Saints Church.
Coming north from Georgetown on Hwy. 17, turn left onto Waverly Road. At 4-way stop, turn right onto Kings River Road. Continue for approximately one block to the church. "
Her grave is located towards the back of the cemetery (which is across the road from the church listed above) on the right side. You may see a 'security light' type of light. Her grave will be about 25 feet to the left of that. Its near a large tree that sort of blocks its view but its not hard to find with some light.
If you enter the cemetery from or near the main gate near the old church building, you will need to basically just take a path of straight back with a slightly right deviation... Good luck!
